3 things that won me over at WWDC 2024

WWDC 2024 was a big event, and it was always meant to be. I spoke to a lot of people during the developer conference, and unanimously, the announcement of Apple’s AI Intelligence platform was perhaps the biggest news. For many, “Apple Intelligence,” the iPhone maker’s unique spin on AI, looks like the beginning of a new era for the company, although to some it may seem a bit basic. It’s reasonable to assume that new AI features coming from Apple will only get better over time—it’s a work in progress. However, for me, I was particularly excited about three software features that got lost in the hype around Apple Intelligence but deserved more attention. Here are three of them.

Math Notes

I’m excited and surprised—over and over—to see “Math Notes” on the iPad, where users can write down a math problem with the Apple Pencil and the app solves it immediately. It feels like magic, and it’s the best showcase of what artificial intelligence can possibly do. Essentially, you can write out math problems (e.g., 2×2=4), and when you draw an equals sign, it will calculate the answer. The best part is that it shows the results in your handwriting. In fact, it can work across a range of functions. Math Notes introduces new ways of teaching math with visuals—and no, it doesn’t replace a math teacher. Look out for a detailed hands-on look at how Math Notes works soon.

Siri interactions on the AirPods Pro

Something on the list that surprised me was Siri interactions, a new feature that lets users control calls with head gestures if they have AirPods Pro in their ears. AirPods are a great way to let Siri read your notifications and messages, but there are times when talking to Siri isn’t convenient or appropriate. Apple’s way of handling this problem is to have you nod your head to accept the call or shake it to decline it. I think this is going to be very cool and certainly has the potential to create some fun experiences. Personally, I’m looking forward to using the feature and seeing for myself how useful it is during a meeting or in public places.

macOS 15 will let you mirror your iPhone

Is it just me, or is everyone pumped about iPhone mirroring on the Mac? I know the technology isn’t new, but based on Apple’s presentation, iPhone mirroring on the Mac is seamless and doesn’t require you to physically hold the device in hand. Not only do you get full control of your iPhone and receive notifications from the device on the Mac, but the iPhone stays locked when this feature is being used (and remains locked). You can open any app on the iPhone, check your Instagram feed, or use your Mac keyboard to reply to an email. I watched the demo video again and again, and I can’t wait to try the feature myself. This is one of the features I am most excited about.
