Connecticut State Police late Saturday said the force was mourning the death of police dog Elmer, the second passing of a K-9 announced this week.Elmer was assigned to Detective David Collins of the Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, according to the state police. CT state police photoAlso this week, Connecticut State Police were mourning the recent death of beloved K-9 Drago, who served Troop C in Tolland.Drago was assigned to Trooper Kyle Kaelberer of Troop C; he died on Thursday, also due to medical complications, according to state police.Collins and K-9 Elmer graduated from the Connecticut State Police 212th Accelerant Detection Class in fall of 2020 and “had served the state” for 3 years, according to state police.“During his career, K-9 Elmer traveled all across the state to assist at numerous fire scenes, working alongside our local, state, and federal partners in locating countless evidentiary items,” state police said in a statement. “Additionally, K-9 Elmer assisted in training fire investigators, as well as educating the public about fire safety. K-9 Elmer was loved by all and will be sorely missed.Kaelberer and Drago were graduates of the Connecticut State Police’s 201st Patrol K-9 Class, as well as the 219th Narcotics Detection K-9 Class, state police said. The two also served together as members of the State Police Tactical Unit, according to state police.“During his career, K-9 Drago successfully located countless wanted suspects, missing persons, as well as a large quantity of illicit narcotics,” state police said. “K-9 Drago was a beloved member of Troop C and made an immeasurable impact on the safety of the citizens of Tolland County, the State of Connecticut, and the Connecticut State Police as a whole.”
