Asian American groups in CT slam former New Britain mayor’s racist comment

Asian American legislators and allies issued a statement Thursday condemning a recent comment by former New Britain Mayor Tim Stewart repeating racist tropes against Asians.The Asian American Pacific Islander caucus of Connecticut’s General Assembly released a statement saying all public officials, past, present and aspiring, should “foster an environment of respect, inclusivity and dignity for all.”Stewart made the comment in response to a Facebook post repeating disparaging comments made by former President Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance falsely alleging Haitians in Ohio have stolen residents’ pets.“Hate speech, misrepresentation and manipulation of facts in all forms, especially when targeted toward our AAPI communities, are entirely unacceptable. Our diverse membership may hold differing political views, but these should be expressed within a culture of respect and civility. Stereotypical and biased comments, such as those linking members of our community to the eating of cats and dogs, are not political views – they are harmful and have no place in any discourse. Such rhetoric demeans the communities it targets and fails to reflect the values we strive to uphold.”Members of the AAPI Issues Caucus include State Sens. Saud Anwar, James Maroney and Tony Hwang and State Reps. Miryam Khan, Kate Farrar, Gary Turco and Rachel Khanna.The Asian Pacific American Coalition of CT also condemned Stewart’s comment.“In a city as diverse as New Britain, it is upsetting that an individual who has held numerous leadership positions is perpetuating harmful stereotypes against the nearly 2,000 Asian citizens he was elected to serve and the Asian community at large,” the group said on Facebook.“We encourage former Mayor Stewart to take the time to understand the diversity of the cultures which are represented not just in the beautiful city of New Britain, but throughout the State of Connecticut and our great nation, which immigrants and their children have and continue to be a part of building.”CT lawmaker flies Haitian flag, city mayor condemns Trump pet-eating stance as ‘harmful rhetoric’The group also condemned the “racist and hateful comments directed against Haitian immigrants in the past few weeks. APAC stands in solidarity with the Haitian community to fight these ignorant and negative stereotypes.Connecticut officials, including Mayors Harry Rilling of Norwalk and Caroline Simmons of Stamford, which oversee cities with large Haitian communities, also denounced the Republican presidential candidate’s racist comments.“The racist and baseless comments and rumors about Haitians perpetuated by Donald Trump and JD Vance are disgusting and have no place in our discourse,” Simmons said in a statement to the Courant this week. “The City of Stamford is proud of its vibrant Haitian community, which contributes to the rich fabric and culture of our city.
