Moviegoers eagerly embraced more “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” this weekend. After a phenomenal opening, the Tim Burton sequel continued to dominate the domestic box office, amassing $51.6 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates on Sunday. Despite a modest 54% drop from the previous week, the North American gross for the Warner Bros. release has soared to $188 million. Internationally, the film added $28.7 million, bringing its global total to an impressive $264.3 million.
“To drop just 54% is really impressive and indicative of pretty solid word of mouth,” commented Paul Dergarabedian, Senior Media Analyst for Comscore. “Audiences are enjoying the film.”
While “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” continued to perform well, it faced little major competition from new releases. Fresh offerings included James McAvoy’s horror film “Speak No Evil,” a satirical documentary featuring right-wing podcaster Matt Walsh, and a new Dave Bautista action flick, “The Killer’s Game.”
Second place in weekend ticket sales was clinched by “Speak No Evil,” a remake of a 2022 Danish horror film about an unsuspecting family spending a weekend with new friends in the country. Starring McAvoy alongside Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy, the Blumhouse production released by Universal Pictures garnered an estimated $11.5 million from 3,375 locations, aided by positive reviews and a strategic release date of Friday the 13th.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” secured third place in its eighth weekend, adding another $5.2 million. The Disney and Marvel blockbuster has accumulated $621.5 million domestically and $1.3 billion globally.
The Daily Wire’s movie “Am I Racist?” took fourth place, earning an estimated $4.7 million from just 1,517 theaters. Styled as a mockumentary akin to “Borat,” this film sees conservative columnist Walsh going undercover as a “DEI trainee.” Directed by Justin Folk, the film follows Walsh’s 2022 exploration of gender ideologies titled “What is a Woman?”
“Am I Racist?” was reportedly produced on a $3 million budget. To distribute it, The Daily Wire partnered with SDG Releasing, a company founded by “God’s Not Dead” writers Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, known for promising the “lowest fees in the business.” Among the trailers preceding “Am I Racist?” is Dinesh D’Souza’s forthcoming film “Vindicating Trump,” which also targets conservative audiences.
Rounding out the top five was “Reagan,” starring Dennis Quaid as the former president. The Showbiz Direct release earned an additional $3 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $23.3 million.
“The Killer’s Game” debuted in sixth place with $2.6 million. Starring Bautista as a hitman with a terminal illness, the action comedy received poor reviews. The faith-based film “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust” managed to secure a spot in the top 10 with its $1.5 million launch.
In limited release, Amazon MGM Studios began rolling out the Sundance breakout “My Old Ass,” starring Maisy Stella. Released in seven theaters in New York, Los Angeles, and Austin, it earned a combined $171,242. The coming-of-age movie will expand nationwide on Sept. 27.
Next weekend, theaters will welcome the release of the Optimus Prime origin story “Transformers One.” However, it may be a quiet couple of weeks at the box office until “Joker: Folie à Deux” graces the big screen on Oct. 4.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
