That extraordinary came in the form of team Captain Rohit Sharma rolling the dice and handing the ball to his trusted ace – the formidable Jasprit Bumrah. In front of an electrifying crowd, their cheers spilling onto the field, Bumrah stepped into the spotlight. Pakistan’s promising start, recovering from an upset by co-host United States in the Super Over at Dallas, proved insufficient against India’s formidable lineup. The Indian triumph seemed historical on multiple fronts. It made for the second-lowest total to be successfully defended at the men’s T20 World Cup; the lowest in India’s T20 international history, and helped extend its 7-1 run against Pakistan.
Beyond this, India exerted its dominance further, defeating Ireland by eight wickets, leading Group A with a superior net-run rate than the US team, tying in points from respective wins over Canada and Pakistan.
Regardless of the outcome, Pakistan’s hopes rest on the remaining encounters with Canada and Ireland, and strategic outcomes from other group games, in a bid to advance to the Super 8s.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam reflected, “We were under pressure. You can’t demand much from the lower-order. Our run rate in the initial six overs fell short of our intended target of 40-45 runs.”
Despite the loss, Pakistan’s bowlers put up a considerable show. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, each delivering figures of 3-21 and Mohammad Amir notching 2-23, while India’s Rishabh Pant stole the show with a top-scoring 42 off 31 balls, of which only three others managed to reach double figures.
