CT man charged with fatally striking toddler in front of Hartford laundromat, fleeing scene

Police have charged a man in connection with a hit-and-run involving a toddler who was struck and killed in Hartford last month.Melvin Daniels, 30, of Hartford turned himself in on Monday on charges of second-degree manslaughter and evading responsibility involving a death and illegally tinted windshield, according to Lt. Aaron Boisvert of the Hartford Police Department.The charges stem from a crash on June 3 shortly before 11 p.m., when officers responded to the TopKat Super Laundromat at 36 New Britain Ave. after several 911 callers reported that a toddler had been struck by a car, Boisvert said.Emergency crews found a 19-month-old girl unresponsive in the road before she was rushed to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.Police ID toddler killed in hit-and-run outside Hartford laundromat. Vehicle found in New HavenUpon investigating, police found that the girl, identified as Camila Elizabeth Ramirez-Carcamo of Hartford, wandered out of the laundromat and into the road when she was struck. Both her parents were inside at the time and accompanied her to the hospital, according to Boisvert.The driver involved left the area in a 2013 black BMW 328xi, which was found the next morning at a McDonald’s on Kimberly Avenue in New Haven.Boisvert said the Hartford Police Crime Scene Division conducted an extensive investigation which led to authorities obtaining a warrant for Daniels’ arrest. He was held on a $300,000 bond following his arrest.
