CT man convicted in 2017 homicide in which he was masked and chased victim, shooting him 3 times

A Connecticut man was found guilty of murder this week in connection with a 2017 shooting where a man was chased down a street and shot three times.Jacob “Jewla” Freeman, 28, of Ansonia, was found guilty by a jury after less than a day of deliberations at Milford Superior Court on Tuesday in a trial presided over by the Judge Eliot D. Prescott, according to a statement from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice on Friday.Freeman’s conviction stems from the shooting death of 21-year-old Jajuan Benavides on Anson Street in Derby on Aug. 11, 2017. Officers were called to Anson and Fifth Streets about 1:50 a.m. after getting 911 calls saying someone was shot, the Derby Police Department said.When officers arrived, they reported that Benavides was suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead about six hours after the initial 911 calls.Police learned that an individual in a mask and dressed in all black chased Benavides down Anson Street, shooting him three times, court records showed.According to court records, surveillance footage showed Freeman in the area of Anson and 6th Streets interacting with Benavides around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, 2017. Freeman is then reportedly seen leaving the area around 11:55 p.m., court records showed.“About a year and a half after the fatal shooting, a jailhouse witness provided numerous details regarding the murder, including that Freeman told him that he returned to the Anson Street area masked up and pulled his gun out on the victim and shot at him,” according to the DCJ.The witness told investigators Freeman claimed that he “stood over him and let him have it,” and watched as Benavides fell to the ground, court records showed.Freeman reportedly told the witness Benavides was saying “chill Jewla chill.” According to the witness, Freeman was wearing black pants, a black hoodie and a mask at the time of the crime.“Though the witness refused to testify at trial, his prior testimony at an earlier probable cause hearing about the murder of Benavides was admitted at this trial,” the DCJ said.According to the DCJ, 12 witnesses testified, including three who described what they saw that night as well as a resident of the area who testified what she heard on the night of the shooting.In addition, the state admitting evidence showing a rap video that was made and posted on social media by Freeman just one month after the homicide where he is heard in his lyrics making specific admissions about how the shooting occurred, the DCJ said.Freeman’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 23 in Milford Superior Court, according to the DCJ.
