CT motorcycle driver dies after colliding with pickup truck on I-91

An Enfield man was killed when the motorcycle he was driving collided with the rear of a pickup truck on Interstate 91 in Windsor on Monday night, ejecting him from the bike before he was struck by an SUV.Troopers identified the victim as 33-year-old Jonathan Scott Schlagel, who was killed following a crash just before 11:20 p.m. on I-91 North in the area of Exit 38, according to Connecticut State Police.State police said Schlagel was driving a 2000 Triumph Sprint RS north when he struck the rear of a 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 driven by a 45-year-old Windsor Locks man. The initial collision led to Schlagel being ejected from the bike.According to state police, a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe that was initially behind both the pickup truck and the motorcycle then struck Schlagel.The motorcycle ended up in the right shoulder, while the Hyundai ended up in a swale separating the HOV lane from the travel lanes. The driver of the Ram pulled over in the shoulder.State police said Schlagel suffered injuries “not compatible with life” and was pronounced dead at the scene.The Santa Fe driver, a 27-year-old East Hartford man, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.The driver of the Ram did not report any injuries.The Hyundai was able to be driven away from the scene, while the Ram and motorcycle had to be towed.The highway was initially closed down in the area of the crash but has since reopened.This crash remains under investigation.Any witnesses or motorists in the area with dashcam footage have been asked to contact Trooper Michael Dean at 860-534-1098 or michael.dean@ct.gov.
