Former Farmington salon owner found guilty of sexually assaulting teens after parties at his home

The former owner of a popular Farmington salon was found guilty Monday of sexually assaulting two teenage girls following parties police say he hosted at his home where he allowed underage teens to consume alcohol and use drugs.David Olivo, 43, was found guilty following a weeks-long trial in Hartford Superior Court, according to the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice.A jury returned a guilty verdict on two counts of each of second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault, judicial officials said.Court records reviewed Tuesday showed Olivo is being held on bonds totaling more than $3 million while he awaits sentencing, which has been scheduled for Sept. 4.According to Courant archives, police accused Olivo of hosting parties during the pandemic at his home where he provided or made available alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or MDMA — which is more commonly known as ecstasy — to children under 16.Former Farmington salon owner accused of sexually assaulting teens, giving them drugs free on more than $1 million bondAccording to criminal justice officials, two teens reported to police in Farmington that Olivo had sexually assaulted them during separate incidents in 2020 and 2021.One of the incidents reportedly occurred as Olivo was hosting one of his parties in July 2020, during which the victim said she wanted to go home, according to judicial officials. Olivo offered to give the girl a ride home and reportedly sexually assaulted her in his vehicle, officials said.Then, in February 2021, Olvio picked up a group of kids and brought them back to his home for what criminal justice officials described as a “sleepover party.” In the early morning hours the next day, a girl woke up and went for a drink in the kitchen, where Olivo reportedly sexually assaulted her, officials said.Both victims testified at Olivo’s trial.“The bravery and commitment of the young victims who stood strong during their testimony to a jury made up of people they have never met is remarkable,” Hartford Judicial District State’s Attorney Sharmese L. Walcott said in a statement Tuesday. “I thank the jury for their time, and I thank these young witnesses for their model of strength and courage.”According to Courant archives, while in jail following his arrest in April 2021, police accused Olivo of trying to tamper with teen witnesses by persuading another teen into pressuring the witnesses into having the charges against him dropped.During subsequent court proceedings, Olivo was offered a plea deal that he turned down. The details of the plea bargain were not immediately available.Before he was arrested on sexual assault charges, Olivo ran a successful salon, which was first located on Farmington Avenue before twice relocating, ending up in Olvio’s residence at the time on Plainville Avenue, Courant archives said.State Judicial Branch records reviewed Tuesday show Olivo has a pending civil lawsuit filed against him in Hartford Superior Court by one of the sexual assault victims.The civil suit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages and alleges that the girl suffered, among other things, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and suicidal ideations, resulting in substantial medical bills.
