Florham Park, N.J. — Haason Reddick’s standoff with the New York Jets has taken a contentious turn as it enters its third week.
On Monday, sources indicated that the star edge rusher had formally requested a trade. However, Jets general manager Joe Douglas emphatically stated that the team has no intention of accommodating Reddick’s demand.
“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report,” Douglas declared in a statement released by the Jets and shared on social media. “Since the trade discussions back in March, we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”
Attempts to reach Reddick’s representatives were unsuccessful.
Reddick was acquired from Philadelphia in the offseason after requesting a trade from the Eagles over unresolved contract issues. He sought a new deal, which the Eagles were unwilling to provide.
Now, the Jets find themselves with a disgruntled Reddick seeking another trade within six months—despite not having practiced with the team. The NFL Network reported on Reddick’s latest trade request.
The 29-year-old Reddick, placed on the reserve/did not report list on July 25, the Jets’ second day of camp practice, was expected to join the team to resolve the contract dispute. Instead, it has stretched to 21 days with no resolution in sight.
Reddick has been absent all offseason since being traded to the Jets for a 2026 conditional third-round draft pick. Initially, the belief was that Reddick would report under his current contract without issues. Something clearly went awry.
Reddick is due to make $14.25 million in base salary in the final year of his contract. By missing the first three weeks of camp, he faces over $1 million in mandatory fines. Additionally, he forfeited a $250,000 workout bonus by not attending the Jets’ offseason workouts. None of Reddick’s salary for this season is guaranteed.
During an introductory video call at the Jets’ facility on April 1, Reddick appeared eager to integrate with his new team, downplaying contract concerns.
“All options are open, but right now, currently, I’m just worried about being here, meeting everybody that’s in the building today,” Reddick said. “Contractual stuff, I’m leaving that up to my agent and Joe to figure out. Whatever happens, I’m going to be happy for and I’m going to give my all, no matter what. That’s just who I am as a person. So, no matter how it goes, how many years, I’m going to be here for however long I’m here for and I’m going to give the team, the fans everything that I have.”
Selected as a first-round pick by Arizona in 2017, Reddick has recorded double-digit sacks in four consecutive seasons, tallying 27 sacks over the last two years with the Eagles.
Reddick was anticipated to bolster the Jets’ pass rush following the departures of Bryce Huff in free agency and the trade of John Franklin-Myers to Denver. In training camp, Micheal Clemons and Will McDonald have seen increased snaps at defensive end opposite Jermaine Johnson. However, the Jets will struggle to replicate the sack production Reddick was expected to provide.
