Man allegedly crashes car into police vehicle, CT authorities investigate as ‘deliberate attack’

A person who allegedly crashed a car into an occupied police vehicle is in custody Saturday, police said.The incident began just before 2 p.m. Saturday when a a West Haven police officer was driving his marked patrol vehicle in the area of Meloy Road and Route 1 “when he observed a vehicle pull alongside him and attempt to run him off the road,” Sgt. Patrick Buturla said in an email.“The officer advised dispatch of this encounter and explained this individual was trying to strike his vehicle,” Buturla said.West Haven Police Department, 200 Saw Mill Road, West Haven. Conn.The officer then continued southbound on Meloy Road and then onto Saw Mill Road, heading for Police Headquarters “all while radioing in updates,” Buturla said.“As additional units began to assist him, one marked patrol vehicle was stopped at the red light on Greta Street by Saw Mill Road,” Buturla said. “The operator of the suspect vehicle then took a sharp left turn and deliberately crashed into a stopped and occupied police vehicle.”Buturla said multiple units then “converged to the accident location” and subsequently apprehended the operator.The department’s Detective Division has assume the investigation as this is being investigated as a “deliberate attack on our Law Enforcement Officers,” Buturla said. More information will be released as this investigation proceeds, he said.
