Readers speak: The US must continue to help shrink global poverty

There are approximately 712 million people living in extreme poverty around the world. As a major global power, the United States has the potential to be one of, if not the greatest leading force in shrinking poverty rates. This can be done through humanitarian aid efforts, funded and implemented by the foreign aid policy and budget. However, the Trump Administration has continuously proposed severe cuts to the foreign aid budget. In 2019, the administration ordered the State Department, and the United States Agency for International Development to freeze remaining funds for foreign aid. It is not unlikely that if former President Trump regains office, there would be more attempts to cut the budget.
With the growing uncertainty of the future presidency, it is critical that we advocate for Congress to vote for increases in the International Affairs Budget, and other foreign aid policies, as they directly impact the lives of millions living in poverty around the world. In 2021, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy notably advocated for the importance of increasing the International Affairs budget, as he recognizes not only its humanitarian benefits, but the role it plays in national security. As a Borgen Project supporter, I’m contacting my congressional leaders to support funding for the International Affairs budget.
