Travelers Championship second round suspended due to weather, resumes at 7:25 p.m. with Tom Kim clubhouse leader

CROMWELL – Scottie Scheffler had just birdied three holes in a row when the horn sounded at TPC River Highlands to signify a suspension of the second round at the Travelers Championship due to lightning nearby. Shane Lowry just eagled No. 13 and improved to 8-under on the day, and Justin Thomas, the other half of his twosome, had done the same to bring his round to 7-under.All three were scorching the back nine, challenging the top spots on the leaderboard when play stopped at 4:11 p.m. There were seven groups, 14 players, still finishing up their round.It was announced at 6:45 p.m. that the practice facilities were being opened at 7 p.m. and play would resume at 7:25 p.m. Friday evening.On top of the leaderboard, where Tom Kim never fell after his 8-under 62 in Thursday’s first round, three new players sat in the top five. Lowry and Thomas, both at 9-under for the tournament with four holes to go, were only one shot back of Scheffler, who was tied in fourth at 10-under with two holes left.At the time the round was paused, it was on track for the lowest scoring average (68.107) for a second round in tournament history. While the round isn’t finished, the rain will only leave the course softer when it resumes. The tournament’s previous low in second round scoring average came in 2011, when players shot an average 68.176.Tee times were moved up an hour on Friday in an effort to avoid the forecasted thunderstorm, and much of the day’s round was played in scorching heat. The heat peaked at 93 degrees around 1 p.m., just as the last groups got to the first tee. He birdied once on the back to get within two shots of Kim’s lead. Akshay Bhatia, who was two shots off the lead entering the day, got within a single stroke of the lead on No. 17 but bogeyed the 18th and found himself tied with Morikawa at 11-under.“I hit a lot of quality shots. I got up-and-down when I needed to, other than 18, but other than that I played good. The wind was supposed to be out of the south and it was northeast the majority of the day, so it was pretty interesting how that came about,” said Bhatia.Xander Schauffele improved to 10-under after shooting 65 in each of the first two rounds. Sungjae Im is tied for sixth at 9-under with Lowry and Thomas. Behind them, three players (Tony Finau, Robert MacIntyre and Tom Hoge) are tied at 8-under, three more at 7-under.MacIntyre and Lowry – whose round will be completed Friday evening – each walked off the course tied for the best second round score at 8-under par 62.
