UConn’s Stephon Castle impresses in Summer League debut with San Antonio Spurs

The stats won’t count for another three months or so, but on Saturday night, former UConn men’s basketball star Stephon Castle put on an NBA jersey and took the floor for the first time.Castle made his debut for the San Antonio Spurs’ summer league squad in the California Classic.The No. 4 overall pick played 20 minutes in the summer league opener against the Charlotte Hornets, scored 12 points on 4 of 12 shooting and finished 2 of 4 from the three-point line. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists. San Antonio was routed however, 97-65.Just as he did at UConn, Castle impressed with his on-ball defense, forcing turnovers and helping hold Hornets starting guard Nick Smith Jr. to 4 of 17 shooting and 2-for-8 from three-point range.“Good defense by Castle, that’s what he does. He blows up teams’ plays in the half court,” said play-by-play announcer Mark Jones after Castle came up with a deflection that led to a first-quarter steal.

— NBA (@NBA) July 7, 2024 Castle will be back in action on Sunday night as the Spurs take on one of the Sacramento Kings’ two teams in the California Classic in Sacramento.The Spurs will play three games in Sacramento before heading to the Las Vegas Summer League, where they’ll play at least four games.
