Convicted felon sentenced to prison for re-entering U.S. following deportation to Mexico in 2015

A man who was deported to Mexico following a federal narcotics conviction in 2015 has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for re-entering the United States.Carlos Fernandez-Barritos, also known as “Ricardo Fernandez,” 30, faced sentencing Tuesday in federal court in Hartford, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.According to federal officials, Fernandez-Barritos, a citizen of Mexico who formerly resided in East Hartford, was deported back to his home country in January 2015 about a month after he was sentenced to 14 months of prison time he had already served for his role in a narcotics trafficking ring.In November 2022, Fernandez-Barritos was arrested by the Hartford Police Department and charged with disorderly conduct, threatening, third-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and interfering with police, officials said. He was released on $20,000 bond.Then in March 2023, members of the East Hartford Police Department responded to a report that Fernandez-Barritos had stabbed his domestic partner, federal officials said. He reportedly fled the area before officers arrived.According to officials, Fernandez-Barritos was arrested on a federal criminal complaint on Aug. 15, 2023, and charged with illegally reentering the U.S. He has been detained since the arrest.Fernandez-Barritos’ sentencing came after he pleaded guilty to the charge on May 3.
